Celebrating the building blocks of biliteracy

During the month of April, we celebrate language and language learning in DoDEA through National Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month. This month-long observance highlights the importance of multilingualism in our increasingly interconnected world. Multilingualism fosters better communication, cultural understanding, and global cooperation. More than a quarter of DoDEA students come from families that speak multiple languages at home. Â Â
Being multilingual offers numerous cognitive benefits and supports DoDEA’s goal to ensure all students are college and career ready. Bilingualism enhances problem-solving skills, improves multitasking abilities, and supports overall cognitive development. Research has shown that learning multiple languages can improve student outcomes on college entrance exams and industry certifications, making students more prepared for postsecondary education and career opportunities. Â
Language proficiency is crucial for effective communication in international military operations, intelligence gathering, and diplomatic negotiations. In the military, language skills can enhance the lethality and effectiveness of the force by enabling better coordination and understanding across different environments. It is well established that agile combat employment requires expertise in language and culture.
The demand for multilingual individuals is rising in business sectors. Research shows 90% of U.S. employers rely on bilingual employees, with over half expecting greater demand in the next five years. Multilingualism opens doors to new markets and opportunities, enhancing company reach and competitiveness.
Schools play a critically important role in supporting the building blocks of multilingualism and biliteracy. By implementing comprehensive language programs, leveraging technology, and creating inclusive learning environments, DoDEA schools are well equipped to help students achieve proficiency in multiple languages. Â
Today, more than 5,000 DoDEA students are learning English as an additional language, and more than 12,000 are learning additional languages beyond English, including Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Turkish and American Sign Language.Â
DoDEA is proud to be able to offer advanced study in multiple global languages. Students in these courses will be strong candidates for the Seal of Biliteracy, a new award for DoDEA students that will be launched in 2025-2026. Â
The cognitive, military, and economic benefits of being multilingual are immense. By elevating excellence in language instruction and supporting the building blocks of biliteracy, we can ensure that all DoDEA students are college and career ready.
